La Refoulerie
is about 70 miles south of the port of Ouistreham (Caen) and
90 miles east of the port of Saint Malo in
the small hamlet of Couberie, near Lassay-les Chateaux.
There is no local transportation and the nearest shops are
in Lassay which is just over a mile away. You will need a
car to get around unless you are a really keen walker.

There are many alternatives especially if you prefer to
avoid the motorways.
Directions from Calais to Lassay Les Chateaux (Approx 5
hours)
The best way is via toll motorway (approx £10). From Calais
follow the signs to Paris and then Boulogne on the Autoroute
A16. Remain on the A16 to Abbeville. On approaching
Abbeville take the A28 towards Rouen. Before you get to
Rouen take the A29 (A28, J11) to Le Harve. After passing
over two very spectacular toll bridges continue on the A29
to the south of Le Havre. At the end of the A29 take the A13 to Caen. Take the
Caen ring road (periferique) and follow signs to Alencon and Le Mans
(J13 Porte d’Espagne).
Continue from Caen to Lassay Les Chateaux below.
Directions from Caen to Lassay Les Chateaux (approx 1.5
hour)
From the port of Ouistreham follow signs to Caen and the A13
on the D514. After approximately 7.8 miles take the exit
(just after passing under a flyover and before the
roundabout) for the N814, sign posted Periferique Est / A13
Paris / Alencon. Stay on the Periferique for approximately 5
miles and exit at J13 (Porte de Espangne) onto the N158 sign
posted to Alencon, Le Mans and Falaise. This is a fast dual
carriageway. After approximately 20 miles on the N158 near
Falaise take the D509 to Bagnoles de l'Orne. Continue on the
D509/D909 for approximately 10.5 miles passing through
Putanges-Pont-Ecrepin until you come to Fromentel. At
Formentel take the D19 to Bagnoles de l'Orne and La Ferte-Mace.
You will need to turn right onto the D924 followed by
immediate second left onto the D19. When you arrive at La
Ferte-Mace take the D916 to Bagnoles de L'Orne (watch
carefully for the signs to Bagnoles). Continue on the D916
bypassing Bagnoles and following signs to Lassay, Mayenne
and Alencon. Remain on the D916 until you arrive at Couterne.
Continue straight on to Lassay on the D34. When you arrive
at Lassay you have the choice of continuing through the town
or going via the bypass, see below.

Option 1 - bypass Lassay:
Just before you get to Lassay you will come to a roundabout
approximately 5.7 miles after passing through the cross
roads at Couterne. At this
roundabout take the first exit left to Mayenne to bypass
Lassay-les-Chateaux on the D34. At the next roundabout continue
straight on, again to Mayenne. At the next roundabout take
the first exit left on the D34 to Mayenne and Le
Hopes. Continue
From Roundabout
below.
Option 2 -
Drive through Lassay:
As you enter Lassay follow the signs to
Mayenne. You will turn left at the cross roads in Lassay
and then the second right to Mayenne on the D34. Shortly
after leaving Lassay on the D34 you will come to a
roundabout. Continue From
Roundabout below.
From
Roundabout:
About 400 yards from the
roundabout on the D34 look out for the signpost to Couberie
and Le Horps to the left at a traffic island. Turn left here
and drive through the village of Couberie (just a few
houses) past the church on the LHS. Shortly after leaving
the village you will see a small road/driveway on the right
and a very small sign to La Refoulerie. Drive to the end of
this road/driveway and you will see the cottage on the right
hand side. You can drive over the grass into the property,
but please keep to the "tram lines" in the grass and do not
park on the grass as this is owned by our neighbour.
